Edwardsville, Ill. - Five members of the Simon Fraser University Clan track and field team achieved NAIA All-American status on Saturday afternoon on the final day of competition at the 2009 NAIA Outdoor Track & Field National Championships, hosted by Southern Illinois University Edwardsville.

In the 800m, Clan sophomore Jessica Smith (North Vancouver, B.C.) came up three hundreds of a second short of repeating as NAIA Outdoor Champion. Smith, leading until the final stretch, was edged at the line by Wayland Baptist's Purity Biwott to finish second overall in a time of 2:05.89. Biwott won the title in a time of 2:05.86. Simon Fraser freshman Helen Crofts (West Vancouver, B.C.), the reigning NAIA Indoor 800m Champion, finished third overall in a time of 2:06.70, while teammate Brianna Kane (Roberts Creek, B.C.) also reached All-American status, finishing sixth in a time of 2:10.90. SFU's Angela Shaw (Langley, B.C.) finished eighth in the race in a time of 2:14.55.

In the women's 400m hurdles, Clan senior Traci Boss (Coquitlam, B.C.) put forth the best performance of her career, racing to a personal best time of 1:01.14 to finish third overall and achieve All-American status in her final race as a member of the track and field team. Boss surged over the final hurdle to pass Concordia's (Neb.) Emily Wolters with 15m left in the race for third.

Starting on the outside in the 1500m, senior Heather Mancell (Anmore, B.C.) quickly cut to the inside of the track and sat in third place following the opening lap. Mancell however faded after contact on the second to last lap, and did not finish the race.

On the men's side, redshirt freshman Ryan Brockerville (Marystown, NL) achieved his first NAIA Outdoor Track & Field All-American mark, finishing sixth in the 3000m steeplechase final in a time of 9:12.24.

Starting on the outside, Brockerville moved into third at the first jump. With four laps remaining, Brockerville fell back to seventh and jockeyed between sixth and seventh for most of the race. In sixth position on the final stretch and closing, Brockerville's final surge was not enough and he was narrowly edged at the line by Malone's James Zeuch, who finished fifth in a time of 9:11.88.

Seniors Boss and Mancell were also named NAIA Scholar-Athletes at the meet. This concludes SFU's track and field varsity season.
