Olympia, WA - The Simon Fraser University Clan men's and women's cross country teams each finished third respectively at the 2008 Pete Steilberg Open, hosted by Evergreen State on Saturday. On the men's side the Clan were led by Ryan Brockerville (Marystown, NL), who finished the 8km course fourth overall in a time of 26:06.06. On the women's side Helen Crofts (North Vancouver, B.C.) was SFU's top runner, completing the 5km course in a time of 18:16.83. The University of Victoria won both team titles, which ended the Clan's streak of four straight women's team titles at the meet. On the men's side, Victoria's Geoff Martinson won the overall title in a time of 25:16.57, while SFU alum Dylan Gant finished third overall. Matt Walters was the Clan's next best runner behind Brockerville, finishing eighth overall in a time of 26:18.28, while Simon Fraser's Keir Forster finished 12th overall in a time of 26:44.01.
In women's action, Alberta's Paula Findlay won the overall title in a time of 17:19.93, while SFU alums Julia Howard, Kristen Kostad and Meredith MacGregor all finished in the top ten. Angela Shaw was Simon Fraser's next best runner behind Crofts, finishing 12th overall in a time of 18:23.14. Emily Palibroda also had an impressive performance for the Clan, running in a time of 18:41.36 to finish 17th overall.
The men's and women's teams are back in action at the BC Championships on October 25.
