Sophomore Evan Shaw went 6-for-12 in the Panthers opening weekend
COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Ohio Dominican baseball team opened the 2010 season on the wrong foot this past weekend in Barbourville, Kentucky as they lost three straight to the NAIA Preseason 16th ranked Bulldogs of Union College.

The Panthers (0-3) dropped a doubleheader on Saturday falling 7-5 and 13-3, and concluded the weekend with a 14-8 loss on Sunday. Signs of rust from the off season were still evident as the Panthers committed 16 errors over the three games, including 10 in Sunday's game.

Senior Andy Onak (Orland Park, IL) went six strong innings from the mound in the opening game allowing three runs on nine hits and striking out six. Onak left the game with the score tied 3-3, but the Bulldogs plated two runs in the seventh to regain the lead. ODU tied it up again in the top of the eighth with two runs of their own, but UnionCollege (3-2) answered scoring two in the home half of the inning for the final tally, 7-5.

Zane Miller (London, OH) took to the mound in game two going 4.1 innings with six earned runs on eight hits and four strikeouts. The Panther defense could not keep ODU in the game as three errors led to six unearned runs for the Bulldogs in the 13-3 decision.

It was more of the same for ODU in game three as 10 errors contributed to 10 unearned Bulldog runs. Drew McGlone (Circleville, OH) took the loss for the Panthers despite allowing only one earned run in four innings of work in the 14-8 setback.

Offensively ODU was led over the weekend by John Lydic (Gahanna, OH) and Evan Shaw (Delaware, OH). Lydic went 6-for-11 (.545) with a pair of doubles and five RBI in the three games. Shaw hit safely in all three contests, going 6-for-12 overall with four runs scored.

The Panthers will look to grab their first victory of the young season when they travel back to Kentucky this weekend to take on two baseball power houses, Georgetown College and Madonna University (MI). Madonna University is ranked 21st in the NAIA Preseason poll and Georgetown is just outside the Top 25 while receiving votes. ODU will play each team on Saturday and Sunday in a non-traditional doubleheader format.
