COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Ohio Dominican women's basketball team just missed out on a third straight NAIA National Tournament appearance, falling 70-67 to Indiana University-Northwest in the A.I.I. Championship game over the weekend in Gary, Indiana. The Panthers defeated Johnson & Wales University (CO) 67-44 on Friday to advance to the championship, but fell just short against the host Redhawks Saturday concluding their season at 16-11.
The Panthers and Redhawks put on quite show in the championship game. The Panthers took an 11 point lead eight minutes into the contest, but could never shake IU-Northwest as the teams entered the intermission all square at 40-40.
Katy Rasor (So./Grove City, OH) scored the first eight points for ODU in the second half, but the game would continue to go back and forth. With each team's season on the line there were a total of 10 ties and 10 lead changes between the No. 1 and 2 seeded teams in the A.I.I. The Panthers rallied late in the game to cut a seven point Redhawks lead down to one, but could not get any closer as they fell 70-67.
Merideth Fox (So./Springboro, OH) led ODU with 18 points and Rasor finished with 13. Tracy Snider (So./Lancaster, OH) added 12, while Abby Glover (So./Centerville, OH) recorded her second double-double of the tournament with 11 points and 12 boards.
In their semifinal game the Panthers played two solid halves of basketball and cruised to the 67-44 win over JWU. It was the second fewest points allowed by ODU this season as they held the Wildcats (6-23) to 29.5 percent (13-for-44) shooting. Rasor paced the Panther attack with 19 points making a career high five three pointers. Glover finished with a double-double scoring 14 points and grabbing a career high 14 rebounds. Snider chipped in with 10 points in the victory.
