ORLANDO, Florida-The OhioDominicanUniversity women's tennis team started their spring outdoor season this week in Orlando, Florida, earning two wins. The Panthers soundly defeated Aquinas College (MI) on Monday evening 9-0 and returned to action on Tuesday morning upending St. Cloud State University (MN) 5-4.
On Monday, the Panthers were able to grab 2-of-3 doubles courts. Earning doubles points were Kate Rodgers (Sr./Milford, OH) and Aline Mariano (Fr./Sao Paulo, Brazil) at #1, 8-2 and Nathalia Braga (Fr./Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) and Caroline Orians (Sr./Upper Sandusky, OH) at #3, 8-3. In singles play, ODU swept 6-of-6 matches, each in straight sets to earn their fourth win of the season.
Tuesday morning saw the Panthers win 4-of-6 singles courts and one doubles point to hold on for the very competitive 5-4 win over NCAADivisionIISt.CloudStateUniversity. Earning singles points for ODU was Mariano at #2 singles, 2-6, 6-4, 7-5, Rodgers at #3 singles, 7-6(5), 6-0, Ruchika Alahakoon (Jr./Colombo, Sri Lanka) on court four 7-5, 6-3, and Mari Monaco (So./Port Clinton, OH) at #6 singles 6-1, 6-3. Clinching the fifth point and the win was the #2 doubles pair of Monaco and Krista Derry (Fr./Baltimore, OH) with a solid 8-6 win.
The Panthers will return to action on Thursday, March 11th when they will play Wesleyan University (CT) in Orlando. The match is set to begin at 12 p.m.
