Vancouver, B.C. - Competing for the first time on UBC's Rashpal Dhillon track, the Simon Fraser University Clan track and field team reclaimed the Achilles Cup, defeating the University of British Columbia Thunderbirds 122-107 to win the 2010 edition of the annual rivalry meet. The win for SFU breaks the all-time stalemate, as Simon Fraser leads the all-time Achilles series 4-3-1, and was SFU's first overall win at the event since 2007.

"I'm extremely excited and proud of our team's performance today," said SFU head coach Brit Townsend. "Particularly because each member of the team stepped up when they were needed. I really want our athletes to take pride in what they are doing [at the Achilles meet], this is our one opportunity in the community to go against the other side [UBC] in this city."

The Clan completely dominated the women's side of the meet, winning 77-38. Helen Crofts (West Vancouver, B.C.) led the way again for the Clan, individually winning the 1500m and 400m in times of 4:46.37 and 56.19, and running the final leg of SFU's winning 4x400m relay team, which won in a time of 4:01.29. Crofts also registered a second place performance for the Clan in the high jump, tying teammate Priye Iworima with a jump of 1.50m. SFU's Rachelle Barnett won the overall title in the high jump with a final leap of 1.55m, while Iworima won the long jump, posting a leap of 5.32m.

Team captain Jane Channell (North Vancouver, B.C.) brought home a title for the Clan in the 200m, besting teammate Brianna Kane (Roberts Creek, B.C.) with a time of 25.80. Kane picked up a win in the 800m, posting a time of 2:13.94 to edge teammate Olivia Brennan (Regina, SK) at the line. Brennan registered a personal best in the 800m with a time of 2:14.13 to finish second. Brennan, Smith and Michaela Kane (Roberts Creek, B.C.) combined with Crofts to win the 4x400m relay.

In the 100m, Liza Whitehead led a 1-2 SFU finish, beating Andrea Abrams to the line with a time of 12.39. The pair combined with Channell to win the 4x100m relay in a time of 49.29. In the field events, Michelle Stuart won the shot put with a throw of 11.05m, and finished second in the javelin with a throw of 36.69m.

On the men's side, UBC defeated SFU 69-45, while Ryan Brockerville (Marystown, NL) was the Clan's top performer, winning the 800m in a time of 1:55.59 and finishing second in the 1500m in a time of 3:56.59. The men's 4x100m relay team also picked up a victory with a time of 42.11, while Tyson Unruh (Saskatoon, SK) claimed the 400m title with a run of 48.79, and combined with teammates Adam Newton, Andrew Boss and Brett Montrose to win the 4x400m relay in a time of 3:19.25.
