Seattle, WA - The inaugural NAIA Association of Independent Institutions Championship men's and women's cross country championships were claimed on Saturday by the rising Cal State San Marcos Cougars cross country program. On the women's side, the #3 ranked Cougars knocked off the defending NAIA National Champions from Simon Fraser University, while on the men's side the Cougars narrowly edged SFU by five points to win the title.  In the women's championship, Dallon Wiliams led the way for CSUSM, cruising to her second victory of the season in a time of 17:10. Cougar runners in fact rounded out the top three at the competition, with Morgan Sjogren and Jessica Sandoval finishing two-three behind teammate Williams, while SFU's Angela Shaw was the next top non CSUSM finisher, completing the 5km course in a time of 18:23.

The Cougars won the tournament with 19 overall points, while SFU finished second with 44 points. The University of British Columbia (63 points) and Soka (120 points) rounded out the competition.

In the men's championship, SFU's Keir Forster claimed the overall title in a time of 25:22, with CSUSM's Alex Guaderrama paced the Cougars, running in a time of 25:38 to finish second overall. Cal State San Marcos had five of the top ten finishers at the meet, to edge SFU with 30 overall points. The Clan finished second with 35 points, while UBC was third with 60 points and Soka rounded out the competition with 120 points.

By virtue of winning the men's and women's A.I.I. Championships, Cal State San Marcos automatically qualifies for the NAIA National Championships, scheduled for November 23, in Kenosha, Wisconsin. At-large berth's for the NAIA National Championships will be announced on Monday.
