Decatur, AL - Simon Fraser University Clan softball senior pitcher Jennifer Van Egdom (Surrey, B.C.) extended her shutout streak at the 2010 NAIA Softball National Championships to ten innings, as SFU defeated Bellevue 4-0 on Saturday afternoon to improve to 2-0 in Pool C play. Van Egdom pitched a complete game two-hitter, striking out three opposing batters, while four separate Simon Fraser hitters registered RBIs, as the Clan can now advance to the Championship Bracket of the tournament with a win on Monday afternoon over Concordia (OR).

"It felt really good out there, you want to perform your best at this time of the year," said Van Egdom following the game. "Everyone on our team is working together right now, our defence is stepping up when we need a play, and we had a couple of timely hits to get the win."

Three runs in the top of the fourth inning proved to be the difference. For the second game in a row, senior Carly Moir (Surrey, B.C.) got the Clan offence rolling, connecting on a double to deep right centerfield that scored Stefani Durrant (Richmond, B.C.). Brittany Mayers (Burnaby, B.C.) then cashed in Leah Riske (Cloverdale, B.C.) with a sacrifice fly to centre, and Moir scored when Haley Cicchetti (Trail, B.C.) crushed a double to deep right field.

SFU added an insurance run in the seventh inning when Kelsey Haberl (Burnaby, B.C.) singled home Jessie Harris (Stouffville, Ont.) to give the Clan the 4-0 victory.

"Our defence is playing really well, and our pitchers are doing a great job of being ready when needed," said SFU head coach Mike Renney following the game. "[Van Egdom] led with her defence as well in this game, I think the highlight defensive play of the game happened in the sixth inning when, with a runner on base, [Van Egdom] scrambled to get to a miss-hit ball that was short up the third baseline. She was able to get to the ball, turn and fire a strike to first base for a real nice out, and kept them off the scoresheet."

The win was Van Egdom's 11th (11-5) of the season. Aly Bowers was dealt the loss for Bellevue, allowing three runs over three and two third innings. SFU faces a tough test on Monday in their final game of Pool C play when they face No. 5 ranked Concordia (OR.) The Cavaliers lost 6-2 on Saturday to Lindsey Wilson, and will be playing for their postseason lives on Monday afternoon.

"We know Concordia is a top team, they won a nail biter in their first game and had a tough start falling behind early today in their loss, but they are worthy of their top five ranking," said Renney. "At this point we are still underdogs, which isn't a bad place to be."

Sunday is a traditional off day at the NAIA National Championships, and SFU will use the time to have a dinner with their host family the Percles, and visit a retirement home in Decatur.
