Portland, Ore. - Having already scored ten goals in their first two games of the season, the Simon Fraser University Clan men's soccer program added four more to their tally on Thursday afternoon, handing the Warner Pacific College Knights a 4-0 defeat for their first road victory of 2010. The Clan, now 3-0 on the season, are back in action on Sunday when they face the University of British Columbia Thunderbirds at Thunderbirds Park.
"I think we played very well, it was our first road game of the year, and our guys came out of the gate on fire," said SFU head coach Alan Koch following the game. "We created scoring opportunities left, right and centre, it took some time to put them all away but thankfully we scored four goals."
The Clan opened scoring in the second minute of the game when Roman Doutkevitch (Lviv, Ukraine) took a pass from freshman Carlo Basso (Coquitlam, B.C.) and beat Knights keeper Sean Ervin to the upper left corner. In the 39th minute, Lucas Ferritto (Hamilton, Ont.) scored the second goal of his career when Alex Hanne (Calgary, AB) connected on a free kick and found Ferritto wide open at the top of the box. Exactly four minutes later Hanne found John Hodnett with a through ball, which Hanne slotted to the far right post to put Simon Fraser up 3-0 at the half.
In the second half, the Clan continued to mount pressure, and in the 53rd minute Doutkevitch found freshman Gagan Josan (Surrey, B.C.), who tapped in Doutkevitch's cross for the clincher.
Hide Ozawa (Victoria, B.C.) earned his third victory of the season and faced four shots, none on goal. The Clan dominated the statistics on Thursday, out shooting WPC 28-to-4, including 13 shots on goal.
Game notes: Although this is the first season for Simon Fraser in NCAA Division II and the Great Northwest Athletic Conference, the Clan are also eligible for NAIA postseason, and are currently ranked second in the NAIA National Rankings, their highest ranking since the NAIA began producing the Top-25 in 2000.
