San Antonio, TX - The Simon Fraser University Clan women's soccer team
lost a heartbreaking 0-0 (7-6 penalty kicks) decision on Saturday
afternoon to the Cal State San Marcos Cougars in the 2008 NAIA
Association of Independent Institutions Championship. With the victory
San Marcos earns an automatic berth to the 2008 NAIA National
Championships, while SFU earned an at-large berth to the tournament and will host an opening round game. SFU managed three shots on goal in the game, however were unable to
convert over the full 90 minutes and two overtime periods. Both Clan
keeper Cassie Newbrook and San Marcos keeper Kaycee Gunion were
flawless in the game. Cal State out shot SFU 5-to-4, however SFU led in
shots on goal 3-to-1. San Marcos also led in corner kicks, 7-to-3.
After
the overtime period ended scoreless, the teams lined up for the
shootout, with Simon-Fraser taking a 3-2 lead. But Cougar keeper
Gunion, a true freshman, made an enormous save in the fourth round, and
Cal State's Breanna Brenton was able to even the score.
With
the score 6-6 heading into the eighth round, Gunion would come up big
once again, stopping another shot to open the window of opportunity for
CSUSM. Up stepped Katelyn Krauss, and with the conference championship
on the line, she calmly delivered to spark the Cougar celebration.
