KINGSVILLE - It was a tale of two games Tuesday as the University of Houston-Victoria Jaguars split a doubleheader with the Texas A&M-Kingsville Javelinas.
The Jaguars jumped out quickly on a cold and blustery afternoon with a six-run first inning en route to a 10-6 victory in the opening game, but as dark fell and the temperatures began to fall even more, the Jaguars gave up six unearned runs in the third inning to drop an 8-2 decision in the nightcap.
The Jaguars increased the lead to 8-0 in the top of the fourth taking advantage of a Javelina error to score one run and a sacrifice fly by Juan Solis (Houston) to add the second.
The Javelinas broke up John Touchton's (Houston) no-hitter and shutout in the fourth and added solo tallies in the fifth, sixth and eight, before plating a pair of runs in the ninth.
Things fell apart for the Jaguars in the third inning of the nightcap as the Javelinas took advantage of two walks, two wild pitches and a misplayed ground ball to score six runs. The Javelinas would add two more in the fourth, before the Jaguars broke the ice in the fifth.
Cory Hulsey (Houston) opened the inning with a walk, stole second and moved to third on a wild pitch before scoring on a single by Chance Marek (Rogers). After Longoria singled, Tyler Steiner (Spring) lined a short to right for a double scoring Marek.
