It was a great weekend of volleyball in Prescott between four NAIA A.I.I (Association
of Independent Institutions) teams, who for the first time in each schools'
history, had the opportunity to qualify for Nationals. The tournament kicked
off Friday the 14th at ten o'clock with # 1 seed University of St. Thomas
out of Houston
beating # 4 seed Embry Riddle Aeronautical University of Prescott in a
competitive start, and finished the four game match (20-25, 25-13, 25-17,
25-23).
Taking place at the same time on court two, # 2 seed Lambuth (TN) defeated # 3 seeded Our Lady of the Lake (TX) in another
close four game match (25-19, 25-23, 19-25, 25-19). Match 3 and 4 took place at
two o'clock with Lambuth defeating Embry Riddle in three (25-12, 25-17,
25-20) and St. Thomas beating Our Lady of the Lake, also in three (26-24, 25-23, 25-10). The final
matches of the day took place at five o'clock with each team gearing up
to play the only team they hadn't played yet that day. On court one, Our
Lady of the Lake fought for a win over Embry
Riddle in a tight four game match (25-20, 26-24, 20-25, 25-19). St. Thomas defeated
Lambuth in a straight three game match on court two (25-20, 25-23, 25-18) to
finish off the first day of the AII tournament, with all teams seeded as they
were initially.
Day two of the A.I.I. tournament took place on Saturday the 15th
and was single elimination with all matches played on one main court. Starting
at nine o'clock, University
of St. Thomas (1) took
Embry Riddle (4) out of the tournament in three games (25-21, 25-13, 25-21) and
thus advanced on to the finals. Match two for the day started at eleven o'clock
between Lambuth (2) and Our Lady of the Lake (3).
Lambuth had already defeated Our Lady in a tight four game match the day before
but Our Lady of the Lake pulled off the win in
an upset against Lambuth to advance to the finals (25-17, 27-25, 25-21). The
A.I.I. tournament championship game started at five o'clock that night between
#1 St. Thomas and # 3 Our Lady of the Lake. Our Lady fought hard in this three game match but
couldn't stand up to St. Thomas'
aggressive, quick offense and scrappy defense (26-24, 25-22, 25-19).
University of St. Thomas
now advances to the first round of the National Tournament as they head to San Diego, California to
compete with the #13 seeded Point
Loma Nazarene
University. The winner of
this first round match will then travel to Sioux City, Iowa
as a top 24 team vying for the 2008 NAIA Volleyball Championship title.
