November 20, 2008 - The NAIA Association of Independent Institutions announced on Thursday their 2008 A.I.I. Women's Soccer All-Conference team, as selected by the A.I.I. women's soccer coaches. Cal State San Marcos head coach Ron Pulvers was named the A.I.I. Coach of the Year, while SFU sophomore midfielder Lauren Lachlan (Port Moody, B.C.) was named the A.I.I. Player of the Year.
Under Pulvers, San Marcos posted a 12-3-4 record on the year, and won the inaugural A.I.I. Championship this past weekend with a penalty kick (0-0, 7-6 pks) victory over SFU. With the win, the Cougars earned an automatic berth to the 2008 NAIA National Championships, and host Benedictine (KS) on Saturday in the opening round of the tournament.
Lachlan, in her second year at Simon Fraser, overcame injuries in the early part of the 2008 season to help lead SFU to their first berth at an NAIA National Championship since 2005. SFU earned the third at-large berth to the tournament, while Lachlan finished the season with five points. SFU will be back on the pitch on Saturday when the Clan host Rocky Mountain in their opening round game of the 2008 NAIA National Championships.
Cal State San Marcos led all A.I.I. schools with five members on the first-team, while SFU was second with four players named to the first-team. Lambuth (TN) was next with two first-team All-Conference student-athletes.
