Johnson & Wales University's Amber Salaz and La Sierra (Calif.) University's Kenneth Penn have earned top honors in the Association of Independent Institutions this week as Salaz has been named Female Athlete of the Week, while Penn has been named the Male Athlete of the Week.
Salaz, a 5-foot-5 senior forward from Thornton, Colo., paced the Wildcats in wins over Arizona Christian and Northern New Mexico. Salaz averaged 23.5 points and seven rebounds a game in the two wins for JWU. She shot 56 percent from the field, including 6 of 9 from 3-point range, and hit 11 of 12 free throws.
Penn, a 6-6 senior forward, averaged 23.5 points and 17 rebounds for the Golden Eagles in a 1-1 week. Penn knocked down 20 points and grabbed 16 rebounds in a win over Portland Bible College and then came back with a 27-point, 18-rebound performance in a loss to California State University-San Marcos. He shot 51 percent from the field and was 11 for 18 at the free throw line, while also recording four assists and a steal in the two games.
