Lima, Ohio – Indiana University Kokomo went 1-1 at University of Northwestern Ohio (UNOH) Tri-Match Saturday. The Cougars faced the host team UNOH in the opening match and fell in three sets (11-25, 20-25, 12-25). IU Kokomo rallied back in the second game and was victorious against Ursuline College in four sets (26-28, 25-22, 25-18, 27-25).
The first match pitted the Cougars against the well-established NAIA team UNOH (18-1). The Lady Racers, who have amassed over 100 wins in six seasons, decisively took the game in straight sets.
"We came out tentative and finally played more of our game in the second game," said Coach Snoddy. "Their offense was too much for us even though we battled better in that second set."
Leading the cougars on offense was freshman Shelby Spall (Kokomo/Western H.S.) with 6 kills and senior setter Heather Tolson (Frankfort/Clinton Prairie [Kankakee C.C.]) handed out 19 assists in the match against UNOH.
After a tough loss against the host team UNOH the Cougars battled back against Ursuline College to take the match in four sets. IU Kokomo lost the first set (26-28) against the Arrows then stormed back taking the next three sets (25-22, 25-18, 27-25).
"This is our 4th win in twice as many matches, so we feel as though we are headed in the right direction with the program," said head coach Kristen Snoddy. "We certainly have a lot left to work on in the last five weeks of our season, but we know, too, that if we keep working hard on our weaknesses that there are more wins ahead."
At the net for the Cougars, junior Miranda Hammons (Indianapolis/North Adams Jerome H.S. [Ancilla College]) turned in an outstanding performance with 18 kills and freshman Rachel Allen also tallied double-figure kills with 14. Freshman setter Courtney Hanson (Logansport/Pioneer H.S.) had an impressive showing with 29 digs and 22 assists. Senior Heather Tolson (Frankfort/Clinton Prairie [Kankakee C.C.]) chipped in 19 assists and sophomore Lael Burrus (Denver/North Miami H.S.) added 19 digs for IU Kokomo.
The Cougars (5-15) return home on Tuesday to battle Vincennes University at Maple Crest Middle school at 7pm.
Indiana University Kokomo serves north central Indiana.
