Jamestown College's Aleona Reyes and Valley City State University's Derek Elliott have earned top honors in the Association of Independent Institutions this week as Becker has been named Female Athlete of the Week, while Elliott has been named the Male Athlete of the Week for the week of Oct. 1-7.
Reyes, a junior from Belen, New Mexico, defended her individual title at the 2012 Northern State University Roe Granger Open cross country meet. Reyes cut 15 seconds off her winning time from a year ago and breezed home a full 17 seconds ahead of her closest competitor. Reyes, a NAIA All-American last year, clocked a winning time of 19 minutes, one second.
Elliott, a 6-1, 211-pound junior running back from Valley City, N.D., turned in a record-breaking performance for the Vikings in a 61-35 win over Mayville State (S.D.). Elliot scored five touchdowns and rolled up 301 total yards of offense. He ran for 258 yards, which is third all-time in a single game at VCSU and his four rushing touchdowns tied him for the VCSU single game record. His five touchdowns set a single game scoring mark for VCSU. It is the second straight week for Elliott to be honored with the A.I.I. award.
