March 4, 2009 - Beginning Friday, March 6, 2009, the inaugural NAIA Association of Independent Institutions Women's Basketball Division I Championship tips-off with six teams vying for a title. When all six teams converge on Orangeburg, South Carolina, the Lambuth (TN) Lady Eagles will be the favorites, earning the tourney's number one seed based on their 23-5 regular season record.
Both the Lady Eagles and second seed Voorhees College receive opening round byes in the tournament. Yolanda Johnson, a 5'8 guard originally from Las Vegas, leads the Lady Eagles, and averages 15.5 points-per-game, while shooting over 36 per cent from beyond the three-point arc. Voorhees has two players who average over 12 points-per-game in Rhadja Page and Courtney Milhouse. Milhouse is also a force on the boards, averaging 5.0 rebounds-per-game, while Page is the team leader in assists with a 4.83 average.
Lambuth will face the winner of Park and Morris, a game that tips off on Friday at noon. Park posted a 5-21 regular season record, however hasn't competed since February 17, and are led by Brianne Edwards, who averages 13.8 points-per-game and is second on the team in rebounding. Morris enters the tournament with an 11-15 record, and are led in scoring and rebounding by 5-11 forward Tyneshia Eaddy, who is averaging 16.2 points and 8.5 rebounds-per-game. Her 8.5 boards-per-game leads all NAIA Divisions 1 Independent players.
The other opening round game features three seed Brescia (9-22) taking on Allen (2-12) for the right to face Voorhees in the second round. Brittany Bird is the leading scorer on Brescia, averaging 17.83 points-per-game and just under four rebounds-per-game. Bird also leads Division I in steals-per-game with a ridiculous 4.933 average and is 14th in the NAIA in scoring. Brittney Jones leads Allen in scoring, averaging ten points-per-game over 14 games, while averaging 1.50 steals-per-game. Tip-off for Brescia-Allen is scheduled for 6 pm.
Semifinals are scheduled for 2 pm and 6 pm on Saturday, March 7, with the finals tipping off at 2 pm on Sunday, March 8.
