St. Peters. MO - Competing at the 2009 NAIA Swimming and Diving National Championships, the Simon Fraser University Clan men's and women's swimming and diving teams had a successful opening day behind the performance of Vicky Sui. Sui, a fourth-year senior on the Clan and former NAIA Swimmer of the Year in 2008 set two new records at the event, breaking marks in both the 50 and 200-yard freestyle events. While Sui was named the 2009 50-yard champion yesterday, her 200-yard record was set in the opening leg of the 800m freestyle relay, and counts as an official record. The women's relay team finished first in a time of 7:38.87, while Sui's time of 1:50.29 in her opening leg proved to be a new NAIA mark. SFU's 200-yard medley women's relay team finished in third overall in the competition.

On the men's side, David Hibberd won SFU's first gold at the 2009 championship by winning the 200-yard individual medley in a time of 1:50.10. Hibberd was also a part of the 200-yard medley team finished second behind California Baptist to claim 34 team points, while the 800-yard freestyle relay team finished in third overall.

"It is a very bunched up field and I suspect our men may rally on Friday," said SFU swimming head coach Liam Donnelly. "There is excellent depth at this year's championship, so winning a team title will not be an easy task."

Competition continues on Friday afternoon and finishes with the finals on Saturday night.
