Vicky Sui won five individual titles at the 2009 NAIA Championships
St. Peters, MO - Despite setting three NAIA records, and winning five titles at the 2009 NAIA Swimming and Diving National Championships, Simon Fraser University Clan swimmer Vicky Sui failed in her bid to repeat as the NAIA Women's Swimmer of the Year, a title she won in 2008. Sui set new meet records in the 50-yard, 100-yard and 200-yard freestyle events over the three-day meet, as well as five first place finishes. The meet was hosted by Lindenwood University.Sui's individual titles included the 50-yard and 100-yard freestyle events, winning the 50-yard in a time of 23.27 and the 100-yard in a time of 50.46. The irony of Sui's 200-yard record was that it was set in the 800-yard freestyle relay event, however because of the meet's schedule Sui was unable to compete in the individual 200-yard championship. Sui was also a part of SFU's winning 400-yard freestyle relay team, alongside Gia Bogetti (Kamloops, B.C.), Addie Kolybaba (Lacombe, B.C.) and Suzanne Wuolle (Salmon Arm, B.C.), that finished in a time of 3:28.55.

SFU's most exciting win of the meet came in the 400-yard medley relay final, with Kolybaba touching the wall seven one-hundreds of a second ahead of the University of the Cumberlands final swimmer to win the crown in a time of 3:52.28. Sui, Emma West-Sadler (Kingston, Ont.) and Courtney Triano (Tsawwassen, B.C.) were also members of the 400-yard championship team. The women's team also posted top-three finishes in the 200-yard freestyle and 200-yard medley relays.

On the men's side SFU finished fifth overall, led in the competition by David Hibberd (Calgary, AB). Hibberd was the Clan's lone gold medalist, winning the 200-yard individual medley in a time of 1:50.10. Hibberd also finished third in the 100-yard freestyle in a time of 45.63, and second in the 200-yard freestyle in a time of 1:39.41. Greg Laughlin (Ajax, Ont.) also posted a second place finish for the Clan in the 200-yard backstroke, finishing in a time of 1:50.21.

SFU's relay teams posted two strong finishes at the meet, with the 200-yard medley relay team of Laughlin, Hibberd, Niels Muntzenburger and Andrew Poznikoff finishing second in a time of 1:31.19, and the 800-yard freestyle relay team featuring the same foursome finishing third overall in a time of 6:48.82.
