Top-seeded Lambuth University Lady Eagles captured the A.I.I Women's Basketball Tournament Championship by a 88-69 victory over second-seeded Voorhees College Lady Tigers held on March 8, 2009 at Claflin University, Orangeburg, SC.
Coach Boldon stated the "Lady Eagles were a step slow all-day" on Saturday in their victory over Morris College 91-87. However, on Sunday, they were in-gear. The game began with the team trading baskets. The game was tied nine times in the first-half until Kayla Bryant hit back-to-back three-pointers with 8:01 remaining in the first-half and the Lady Eagles never looked back. Lambuth continued to build its lead to 46-36 at the end of the first-half.
The second-half began with Lambuth building its lead to 15 points. With 9:35 remaining in the game, the Lady Tigers began to play more aggressive. Voorhees went on a 14-3 run to cut the lead to 67-64. But the Lady Eagles would not let Voorhees wrestle the lead from them. The Lady Eagles hit five three-pointer baskets. Leading the assault was point guard Chytearra Kintchen and Yolanda Johnson. With 4:48 remaining in the game, Lambuth's 20-4 run was too much for the Lady Tigers.
Lambuth's Yolanda Johnson was named the tournament's Outstanding Player. The All-Tournament Team included Yolanda Johnson and Chytearra Kintchen from Lambuth University, Jennifer Perry and Mary Carson from Voorhees College, Brittney Bird from Brescia University, and Shaniqua Campbell from Morris College.
